The client

Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB) served over 1.5 million passengers in 2015.
The airport’s senior management wants to see that number grow to 2 million by 2020 making travelers’ experience in the airport more enjoyable and memorable.

Mandated by Cossette, Canada’s largest marketing and communications agency, Samsao developed a native solution for iOS and Android platforms, following Cossette’s strategy and design.

The challenge

YQB needed to look for ways to reinvent itself. Deep analysis, including surveys conducted with Aéroport de Québec travelers, convinced stakeholders that a traveler’s journey through the airport could be chaotic.

The stakeholders wanted to simplify and improve each traveler’s experience—from the time that travelers arrived by car at the airport to the time they boarded an aircraft—so they decided to create a mobile application that would give passengers relevant information based on their location in the terminal.

Unfortunately, inside buildings, GPS location is often inconsistent or inaccurate and thus endangers the user experience.

YQB’s digital solution thus needed its own geolocation solution, and that workaround came in the form of beacon technology.

The solution

Beacons use Bluetooth Low Energy to broadcast information to any devices listening nearby. With the help of beacons, the YQB mobile application can pinpoint a user’s location within the airport and serve up pertinent information in real-time.

Samsao’s expertise in mobile technologies and our deep experience in Internet of Things (IoT) app integration enabled us to develop seamless connections between the mobile app and the backend infrastructure.

We successfully delivered a cutting-edge mobile experience for the airport’s travelers with high adoption and user retention within a short timeframe.

The results

The final solution accompanies passengers through every step of their airport journey. It allows travelers to reserve a parking space, track flights in real time, and monitor waiting times at security checkpoints.

In terms of competitive advantage, YQB is now an innovator among airports in Canada.

As for stakeholders, the app gives them a direct line of communication with travelers, valuable data about how long it takes passengers to go through the airport, as well as the areas where they spend the most time.
